Another mystery…
Saturday, August 21st, 2010Clutch bp10-5 has hatched, and it looks like we may have something of a mystery on our hands.
This little guy (yep, it's a male!) hatched out alongside three of what look like our 'normal' lessers that hatch. He looks similar to a het red lesser, but everyone I've talked to says not quite the same. You can bet he'll be going back to his mother as soon as he's breeding size to see if there really is something going on!
Paradoxical
Saturday, August 14th, 2010Look at this male hatchling, he pulled a fast one on us. He poked his head out as a normal, then mingled with his brethren, and picked up some lesser color.
He just didn't want to be a normal, and he is anything but that. This guy is gorgeous, and we can't wait until he has his first shed. Clutch picture of his mates at the end of the post.
Cheers,
Kingpin eye candy!
Tuesday, August 10th, 2010Good luck with the bad…
Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010Clutch 3 is out! Final tally is 1.0 kingpin, 2.0 pinstripes, 2.2 enchis, and 1.0 normal. Gotta say I'm pretty happy with the outcome!
Now for the bad luck. Our spider female laid her clutch last night, and it ended up being mostly slugs. Two good eggs and nine slugs. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed for a lesser bee or stinger bee out of one of those eggs!
Lunch time surprise…
Thursday, July 22nd, 2010So I'm on my lunch break, and I wander into the snake room to see if some of our ball pythons had shed last night. Imagine my surprise when I turn around and see this!
We totally didn't expect any of our Sumatrans to go this year, especially our Hartwig animals as she only locked up once that we saw. Fifteen nice big eggs, but a few looked like they might have been infertile when I candled them. Few days in the incubator should be all it takes to find that out.
What’s yellow, white, and eggs all over?
Tuesday, July 20th, 2010Albino eggs! Really hoping to get some albino spiders out of this clutch, but could also end up with some enchi het albinos. Can't say that would be a bad consolation prize! This is clutch number nine.
Clutch number 8 is in the bag…
Monday, July 19th, 2010Our hypo laid 6 eggs today. She was bred to a pastel possible het. hypo at the beginning of the season, and then to our enchi for the last bit of the season. Gotta say, I'm hoping for a male enchi het. hypo out of this clutch. You can see the details here.
Here come the enchis!
Monday, July 12th, 2010Back from camping…
Saturday, July 10th, 2010and clutch number 2 has started pipping!
Possible goodness…
Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010Clutch number six is cooking! Here's hoping for some enchi's out of this het hypo girl.
More eggs!
Saturday, June 19th, 2010Clutch number five is out of the snake and into the incubator! This will be another clutch of lessers, but maybe with a twist?
Bad omens…
Thursday, June 10th, 2010Clutch 4 is on the ground... gonna have to watch my fingers when these ones hatch!
Another ovulation…
Tuesday, June 8th, 2010Not a bad first clutch…
Tuesday, June 1st, 2010Our pinstripe laid her eggs last night, and totally surprised us with an extra egg. I had counted seven eggs when I palpated her after ovulation. Not a bad first clutch at all, especially for a two year old. This is our third clutch for the year, and we should be getting a clutch a week for the rest of June.
Het. Clown ovulation!
Saturday, May 29th, 2010Het. Hypo ovulation…
Sunday, May 23rd, 2010It's girls like this that almost make hypo's seem co-dom! Wasn't sure originally if I was catching the tail end of an ovulation or if she was just building, but she went into shed a few days ago -- almost exactly 2 weeks to the day. At the moment I'm considering her cooked, I can't for the life of me get a good palpation on her. Soon as I get near where the follicles/eggs would be she tenses right up solid. It's like trying to palpate a piece of pvc pipe!
First clutch is out!
Monday, May 17th, 2010Our first clutch is out of the eggs! There's some GREAT looking lessers in this clutch. Hopefully any more lessers we hatch out this year look just as good.
Pipped!
Thursday, May 13th, 2010Who doesn’t like eggs on a Sunday morning?
Sunday, May 9th, 2010Got our second clutch of eggs for the year this morning! I decided to give the straight vermiculite incubation method a shot on this clutch to see if I like it better than using the suspended method.
No news on the first clutch just yet, although they should be pipping anytime now. We've had a few more ovulations and a pre-lay shed or two, but other than that it's been pretty quiet around here.
Better late than never
Monday, May 3rd, 2010Finally this little guy has figured out what he's supposed to be doing. I'm really not sure if the albino girl is going to go or not this year, she's got follicles but there hasn't been a whole lot of development with them lately. Hopefully she'll end up going after all and give us a shot at some albino spiders!

Black bloods breeding!
Monday, April 12th, 2010Guess what? Got a lock between our black bloods! The female is blue in this picture (so sorry it is such a horrible picture), she was our first Sumatran short tailed python, and the guy she is paired up with came with her. We bought both from Jeff Hartwig, he has some of the darkest black bloods around.

Here are better pictures of these two (but, not the best, sorry!)

Another one for the books…
Saturday, March 27th, 2010Eggs!
Sunday, March 14th, 2010First clutch of the year! And she was bred to our Lesser male none the less! The past two years our girls have always been a few days to a week late in laying their eggs, imagine my surprise when I pulled open her tub this morning and saw eggs right on schedule! Now for the longest two months of the year to start.
